Dyson Root 6 Hand Held Vacuum Cleaner Review

When I first saw the Dyson Hand Held Vacuum Cleaner in Amazon’s top selling appliance list I thought “how did a drill get into the appliance category?” As it turns out, this oddity isn’t a drill at all but a hand held vacuum.

I like this handheld because this is a man's vacuum cleaner. Dyson built this handheld vacuum cleaner with as much power as they could pack into the Root 6 frame. This hand held vacuum is great for getting dirt in high up, hard to reach places or removing dirt after a nasty accident. My favorite use for this handheld vacuum is cleaning keyboard.

Cooper Cooler Beverage Cooler HC01 Review

I really like my drinks ice cold. Even in winter when it’s hailing and 20 degrees outside I love my water, Gatorade, and soda ice cold. When I saw the Cooper Cooler HC01 Rapid Beverage Chiller I thought wow! Cold beverages whenever I want! But after a little bit more reading I wasn’t impressed

First off, the Cooper Cooler can only chill one can or bottle of liquid at a time. Second, and most importantly, I couldn’t envision a single instance where I would need or want to use a beverage chiller.

To use the Cooper Cooler you need something cold already. The Cooper Cooler doesn’t create cold, it merely disperses it. Let’s say you’re on the beach and want to chill your warm can of coke with your Cooper Cooler. To make it work you’ll need an ice chest filled with cold water and ice to cool down your coke.

The Cooper Cooler HC01 isn’t a practical device and you’re probably better off buying a mini fridge.

Hoover Steam F5505 SteamVac Spot Cleaner Review

Hoover F5505 SteamVac Spot Carpet Cleaner

I wish I could review this SteamVac by Hoover, but unfortunately Hoover has not provided nearly enough details to give this Steam Vacuum a proper evaluation. I’ll provide you as best an overview of features as I can.

Features

Adjustable handle height
The handle of the F5505 Steam Vac allows users to adjust handle height.

Attachments / Hose
The Hoover Steam Vac F5505 comes with a 5 foot long hose for attachments and includes a steam vac brush for cleaning furniture and hard to reach spaces.

Folding Design
Handle folds down for easy storage. (Folding design does not reduce length or width.)

This model folds

Final Note
Hoover has not provided enough information to write a detailed review. It’s the least expensive steam cleaning vacuum cleaner in their lineup and is definitely a no frills model. My biggest complaint with the F5505 SteamVac is Hoover’s claim that this model is “powerful”. I searched their website up and down to find out just how powerful it is and unfortunately they have not provided this information. I’ve emailed customer service with an information request and hopefully I’ll get a response within a few days from their staff.

Hoover Agility SteamVac 5 Brush Agitation System

The HOOVER Agility 5-Brush Agitation SteamVac is a steam vacuum cleaner designed for home use. The The Hoover Agility SteamVac comes with a Clean Surge button that releases extra solution into your carpet. Use this feature to clean high traffic areas, dark spots, and hard to remove stains.

This Steam Vac is designed with a folding handle. It’s ideal for those who want to conserve vertical storage space. Folding handle does not reduce length or width of this steam vac.

This Hoover SteamVac Folds

Spinning Brushes
In addition to spinning head brushes, the Hoover Agility Steam Vac includes a hand-held rotating brush. This is a great for removing stains on furniture, hard to reach spots, and stubborn carpet stains.

These spinning brushes clean deep.

Heated Cleaning
The Agility by Hoover is designed to heat the steam vac’s cleaning solution with pressure as it exits the vacuum head.

Extension Cord
24 foot extension cord allows provides users with flexibility and freedom when using cleaning their carpets.

Product Notes:
The Hoover Agility Steam Vac has one fatal flaw. It lacks a rinse option. Users can’t spray clean tap water into their carpets to rinse their cleaning solution from their carpet. The spinning head brushes are removable for quick and hassle free cleaning after you’ve steam cleaned your carpets. This model comes fully assembled, you can take it out and steam clean your carpets as soon as you bring home.

One last note, the Hoover Agility Steam Vac comes in two different models. Both are identical in size and features. The only difference between the two is color. Some retailers and e-tailers offer both models at different prices. If color isn’t a concern, go with the cheapest model.

Eureka 4870GZ Boss Smart Vac Upright Vacuum

Good evening, your Sensei returns from another hard day at work anxious to dispense his wisdom. Tonight I review the Eureka Smart Vac Upright Vacuum. Does this Vacuum really suck, or does it blow? Read on and find out.

Product Review: Eureka 4870GZ Boss Smart-Vac Upright Vacuum
MSRP: $149.99

True HEPA Filter: Yes

The 487GZ Upright Vacuum by Eureka is a no frills vacuum with excellent suction. It includes standard cleaning tools and a 30 foot electrical cord. This is also a great low cost vacuum for allergy sufferers. This Eureka Upright Vacuum includes a True HEPA filter system that prevents 99% of dust 3 microns and larger from being put back into the air you breathe!

Included attachments for the Eureka 4870GZ Upright Vacuum Cleaner.

Like I said, this is a no frills vacuum, and the $149.99 price point reflects that statement. If allergies or dust isn’t a big concern I recommend you check out the Hoover Tempo Widepath Vacuum instead, its more than $50 dollars cheaper and has very powerful suction. However, the Eureka Boss Smart-Vac is still a great buy at this price because it includes a True HEPA filter into its design. The Eureka 4870GZ Upright Vacuum earns 5 stars out of 5!

This Vacuum Cleaner gets 5 Stars for a small price
and including a True HEPA Filter system.

Roomba IRobot Vacuum Cleaner

By special request, here is my review of the Roomba IRobot Vacuum Cleaner.

Product: Roomba IRobot Vacuum Cleaner

MSRP: $89.99 - $299.99

Yes, dawn of the Personal Robot Age is here. At least once a week science releases the results of a research project, experiment, or design challenge that pushes the limits of robotics further. Each new advancement brings more practical applications of robotics technology into the home. The Roomba IRobot Vacuum Cleaner is an excellent example of the rapidly changing scene of electronics.

The best feature of the Roomba is that despite its name, it’s not planning the subjugation of the human race, hunting down Will Smith, or making a mockery of the book I Robot by Isaac Asimov. As a matter of fact, if you made a documentary about using a Roomba Vacuum Cleaner you’ll probably have a plot line more similar to the book I Robot than I Robot the movie I Robot starring Will Smith even if you haven’t heard of the book! That’s because the Roomba IRobot is a helper robot and will actually clean your carpet for you so you don’t have to.

The question you’re probably asking yourself right now is “does it work?” Of course it does! The Roomba Vacuum Cleaner works on thin and thick set carpets, wood floors, and tile floors. You can set invisible walls to keep the Roomba within certain boundaries and prevent it from cleaning in heavy traffic areas or other areas you would prefer not having a robot clean.

The various Roomba models share these common features: ability to recharge batteries, set up invisible barriers to keep the Roomba out of specific areas, and programmable schedules so you don’t even have to remember to turn the Roomba IRobot on.

Though the Roomba can’t replace a human….yet. Its still a very useful appliance. It can run when you’re at work or school so you don’t have to worry about a messy carpet if company unexpectedly drops by, and its also very quiet. However, owners with long haired pets may want to stay away from the Roomba IRobot because it’s known for getting tangled in hair and rendered unusable. It may have a few bugs, but its still a neat little appliance and earns a good review. The Roomba gets 4 stars out of 5.

The Roomba IRobot Vacuum Cleaner earns high marks for convenience, cuteness and actually working.
The Roomba IRobot Vacuum gets a 4
for actually working!

Alen YTA500 Portable Mini Fridge Review

Product: Alen YTA500 Portable Mini Fridge

The Alen Mini Fridge can store up to 6 cans of soda! That’s incredible for a portable mini fridge! It can also run on your car battery, so you can take it with you on long car trips and keep your drinks cold on long car trips and includes a car power adapter.

LG LFX25960SW Refrigerator Review

Tonight, I bring you yet another LG Refrigerator Review. LG has managed to earn great ratings for all of its products; can the LG LFX25960SW Refrigerator keep defend the good LG name? Read on and find out.

Product: LG LFX25960SW Refrigerator
MSRP: $2199

Positives
If you’ve read through any of the other LG refrigerator reviews you’ll notice several recurring features throughout their line of refrigerators. The LFX25960SW by LG includes several of these features such as SmoothTouch digital temperature controls that allow you to control the temperature in different compartments of the freezer, allows you to engage the very useful accelerated cooling feature.

This LG Refrigerator also includes the OptiBin crisper, LG’s excellently designed humidity compartment that helps preserve fresh fruits and vegetables.

You may recall me taking away points from a KitchenAid Refrigerator for a sliding freezer drawer on top of the refrigerator. The high location made that feature very impractical. Lucky for us, LG made the LFX25960SW with sliding freezer drawer on the bottom! Yes, you can actually make use of the sliding drawer on this refrigerator!

Other features include a built in wine rack, utility bin, egg tray, and 4 slide-out spill protected shelves to help you organize everything you might need to store. This model also includes a built in water filtration system and ice dispenser that can serve crushed as well as crescent shaped ice.

Negatives
This LG model offers few features to distinguish it from several other similar LG Refrigerator models that sell for several hundred dollars less.

Final Analysis
LG builds and designs quality appliances with a sleek, modern look. This refrigerator will give you many good years of service with very few problems. However, if you’re really looking for value you’re going to want to check out other LG Refrigerators or other appliance brands like Whirlpool and GE. This refrigerator gets a 3.5 out of 5.

This LG Refrigerator gets a medicore review for being several hundred dollars more expensive than the next model down without adding anything extra.
This medicore LG Refrigerator earns a 3.5 in this review.

Appliance Guide : New vs Used Appliances

It’s high time I explain the differences between used and new appliances. (Thanks Jan.) Used appliances offer a 15% to 40% reduction in price, but are the risks worth the cost?

Remanufactured Appliances: The Basics
First of all, it’s very important to understand the difference between remanufactured appliances and used appliances. A used appliance is a unit like a refrigerator, washer, or mixer that is defective, has been replaced, or not used anymore by a consumer. A consumer will generally trade these products in for store credit or cold hard cash. Retailers will superficially test these appliances and put them on their showroom floors (Though often on their Ebay Stores.) at a greatly reduced priced compared to their brand new counterparts.

Remanufactured appliances differ from used appliances in one key way, they are thoroughly tested and often completely rebuilt and typically carry better warranties than used appliances. Because of the extra labor and cost of replacement parts, remanufactured appliances generally cost more than used appliances.

Because used appliances aren’t thoroughly tested, I strongly advise against purchasing large used appliances. Yes, you may find an amazing deal here and there from your neighbor down the street or at a local yard sale, but buying used equipment from a so called Mom and Pop appliance store is very risky business.

Now that we have the basics of pre-owned appliances out of the way, lets explore how remanufactured appliances measure up to brand new equipment.

WarrantyBrand new appliances come with more comprehensive warranties that cover more items for a longer period of time such as electronics, wearable parts like handles and grips, and frame of the appliance. Warranties on new appliances are also backed by the manufacturer and remanufactured warranties generally aren’t. Most remanufactured appliances are warranted for 60 – 90 days compared to a 2 to 4 year warranty period on new equipment.

Price
Price is the other huge difference between new and remanufactured appliances. New Appliances sell for 15% - 40% more than remanufactured appliances. These products on Amazon, for example highlight the possible savings of buying a remanufactured appliance.

Product: iRobot Roomba 4230
Brand New: $329.99
Remanufactured: $199
Difference: $130.99

Bissell 1930R QuickSteamer Steam Clean Vacuum
Brand New: $99.99
Remanufactured: $59.99
Difference: $40

For anybody who wants the most bang for their buck, remanufactured appliances are the best route to go. If you’re worried about your appliance not working when you bring it home, purchase an extended warranty. (Unfortunately, this sharply decreases your savings.) Remember, appliances marked “used” are going to be a lot more riskier than appliances “marked” remanufactured, so I advise only buying used equipment from people or appliance stores you’ve dealt with in the past and trust.

Reader Mailbag: Remanufactured vs New Appliances

Today I got an email about a subject I’ve been meaning to write about for the past two weeks. I’ll let the Jan from New York open the dialogue up:

Dear Wise and Gracious Appliance Sensei,

Thank you for your reviews on refrigerators. They helped me and my husband choose a great refrigerator that fits great inside our new apartment.

We’re a busy couple and we don’t always have time to do everything we should. That’s why I started looking into the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner. We were comparing prices on Amazon and noticed that they offered new models as well as remanufactured models. Can you explain the differences between new models and remanufactured models? Oh yeah, and tell us if the Roomba is worth buying? Thanks,

Jan
New York, NY

Thanks for that email Jan! I would be glad to explain the differences between remanufactured appliances and brand new appliances! Oh, and the Roomba Vacuum Cleaner Robot Review will be up shortly too!

Thanks for the email Jan and keep those emails coming.

Hoover Tempo Widepath Bagged Upright Vacuum U5140900 Review

Welcome to my first foray into the world of Vacuum Cleaners. I didn’t want to review a vacuum that sucked and if you don’t need a vacuum you can view my other appliance reviews or blow on through this site.

Product: Hoover Tempo Widepath Bagged Upright Vacuum U5140900
MSRP: $59.99

Positives
Power, power, and more power describe this bargain vacuum by Hoover. The Tempo Widepath comes with a very powerful 12 amp motor and many users are reporting that the vacuum bag is filled with dust and dirt that their old vacuum wasn’t able to remove within 1 or 2 uses! In fact, this vacuum is so powerful it caused many to complain to Hoover that their vacuum was defective when in reality their vacuum was in fine working condition. In reality, their new vacuum had picked up so much dust in such a small amount of time the bag was full and couldn’t fit anymore waste inside. All they had to do to get their vacuums up and running again was replace the bag. (Cleaning the filter helped too.)

Negatives
You may need to buy and replace the drive belt a little more often compared to most other vacuums. Some users have reported poor suction on hardwood floors. The big and tall may want to avoid this short vacuum.

Final Analysis
At $69.99 this is one of the cheapest vacuums on the market. Hoover delivers an extraordinary product with incredible cleaning power and 3 different hose attachments to get reach hard to clean spaces. The Hoover Tempo Widepath gets a perfect 5 stars out of 5 for incredible performance and value.

The U5140900 vacuum cleaner by hoover is a great choice for anyone!
The Hoover Tempo Widepath gets a perfect 5 stars
for a low price and highly above average performance.

Stir Crazy Popcorn Maker Review

I thought it was time I take a break from the usual, refrigerators, washers, and dryers and review my favorite popcorn popper. Tonight, I bring you a review of the West Bend Stir Crazy Popcorn Popper

Product: West Bend Stir Crazy Popcorn Popper
MSRP: $39.99

PositivesThe built in butter well is the real unique feature on this popcorn popper. It allows you to easily and evenly butter your popcorn without soaking it in a sea of butter, leaving you with a soggy mess instead of a light and fluffy delight.

For those concerned about cleaning, this popcorn maker is coated with a non stick popping surface that repels grease and reduces cooking time. The Stir Crazy Popcorn Popper can also hold a lot of popcorn! It easily pops 6 quarts of popcorn at a time and includes simple instructions for making your popcorn.

Some of you may already have popcorn makers in your home, and you know how frustrating it can be when all your popcorn doesn’t pop or worse yet, burns. Well, the Stir Crazy Popper can usually make 25% more popcorn with an equal amount of kernels than most other popcorn makers.

Negatives
Despite the nonstick cooking surface, this popcorn maker is still a bit of a pain to clean. There are several removable parts which must all be removed and washed before you put it away.

Final Analysis
This popcorn maker produces better popcorn than typical microwavable popcorn bags and most other popcorn poppers. It uses a well designed popcorn stirrer to evenly pop kernels and increases the percentage of kernels popped. However, because it is a pain to clean up after, I can’t give the Stir Crazy popcorn popper my highest rating. However, it still is a nifty thing to have around if you’re a parent or grandparent because children get a real kick out of watching popcorn pop. It’s a great beginning to any family movie night! The Stir Crazy Popcorn Machine gets 4 out of 5.

The Stir Crazy gets 4 stars for making great popcorn!

KitchenAid KTRC19KMSS Refrigerator Review

Product: KitchenAid KTRC19KMSS Refrigerator
MSRP: $1099

Tonight your sensei wishes to revisit KitchenAid Refrigerators in hopes he can find one worth recommending. So tonight, I bring you a review of the KitchenAid KTRC19KMSS Refrigerator.

Positives
This KitchenAid refrigerator’s most unique feature is a slide out freezer drawer. Yes, you read right, a sliding freezer drawer. When I first learned about this drawer I quickly pondered over how a sliding drawer inside a freezer would change the dynamics of the food hiding wars I’ve been waging for the past two decades with my family and overnight guests. Then I realized if I did have one I would have to step up my game because the sliding drawer allows you to see so much more of your freezer. It would be very hard to loose things like small, rare boxes of frozen pizza or that spare Mississippi Mud Pie you bought from the ice cream man.

Ever spill a carton of milk or pitcher of koolaid in your refrigerator? I have. I want to kick myself every time I do it. (Mrs. Sensei usually does it for me.) Its not just spilling that makes me mad, its spilling and not be able to anything except watch all the messy, sticky liquid drip from one level of my refrigerator to the next. Well, this refrigerator would end half of my frustration. Its equipped with KitchenAid’s SpillClean glass shelves that are built with raised edges, which means if you spill, you’re spill is contained!

Energy consumption is a major factor to consider when rating an appliance. Appliances that get the Energy Star seal of approval are highly energy efficient, saving you money, reducing pollution, and conserves natural resources. (I always try to buy energy efficient appliances, its not just ethical, but economical.) You’ll be glad to know that the KitchenAid KTRC19KMSS is doing its part and has earned an Energy Star award! This refrigerator will likely take a huge chunk out of your energy bill.

Negatives
After I kept thinking about it, I didn’t think the roll out freezer drawer on the KitchenAid KTRC19KMSS Refrigerator helped too many people see what’s inside their freezer. The drawer is too high to be practically used for that purpose. (This was a poor marketing decision; they should have focused on how a roll out freezer drawer would be easy to clean, because it is.) Roll out freezer drawers, or drawers in any freezer for that matter are only useful if the freezer is on the bottom of a unit, rather than the top. (Unless of course you’re 7’1”.) Roll out freezer doors are a good idea, just not for this style of freezer.

Final Analysis
I was very pleased with the features of this Refrigerator. The $1099 MSRP makes this an excellent mid-range refrigerator. It offers several convenience features including accurate temperature controls, a spill guard, and a slide out freezer drawer that’s makes cleaning slightly less of a hassle. There weren’t any huge drawbacks, and this is an excellent refrigerator choice for those in the $1000 price range. I give the KitchenAid KTRC19KMSS Refrigerator a 4/5. Yes, the KTRC19KMSS has managed to up the reputation established by the
KitchenAid Architect Series KSRA22KNSS.

The KitchenAid Refrigerator receives 4 stars for great value and an excellent range of features.

Whirlpool Duet Electric / Gas Dryer Review

Appliance: Whirlpool Duet Electric / Gas Dryer GEW9250P / GGW9250P
Price Point: $849.00 and $909 respectively.

Tonight I’ll be reviewing the Duet Electric / Gas Dryer by Whirlpool. I’m reviewing these two dryers together because they are both exactly the same in programs, size, and specifications except one is powered by gas and one is powered by electricity. Are these washing machines worthy enough to be included in the same set as the Duet Washer? Read on and find out.

Positives
The GEW9250P dryer features 5 temperature selections, a handy bulky items cycle, Wrinkle Shield, and easy to navigate electronic controls. However, the most utilitarian feature on these dryers is the Senseon Drying system that detects when your clothes are dry and stops drying mid-cycle if your clothes dry before the drying cycle is finished. (Of course, you don’t have to worry about your clothes being wrinkled with the built in Wrinkle Shield that intermittently engages to prevent wrinkles.) This cuts down on expensive energy bills and prevents your clothes from over drying, which can damage colors and fabrics.

Another excellent feature is the Quiet Dry Plus Noise Reduction System that reduces dryer noisy dryer ambiance. (Excellent for laundry rooms next door to other rooms or those who live in apartments and condos.) The Duet Electric Dryer is also great for those with limited space because it can be stacked with a Duet Washing Machine, saving precious floor space you need for storing things like ski boots and 200 lb. bags of dog food from Cost Co.

Negatives
Unlike its older brother, the Whirlpool Duet Washer, the Duet Electric Dryer has no flaws! It comes in 3 different colors and is a great addition to any laundry room. It has modes for sensitive clothes, durable and bulky articles of clothing and can handle anything in between. This is an excellent buy!

Final Analysis
The GEW9250P Electric Dryer is a great choice for anyone! I give this Whirlpool Dryer my second highest rating: a perfect 5 stars out of 5! Just remember, if you choose to go with a the energy bill cutting Gas Whirlpool Duet Dryer, make sure your home is already set up to run one, or you could end up paying another $100 - $200 dollars to get it working.

Electric Dryers versus Gas Dryers :The Comparison

Okay, I’ve gotten some reader feedback about what appliances you want me to review and write guides for. So, by popular demand here is a guide to Gas and Electric dryers.

Gas and Electric Dryer Myths1: I’ve heard that _________ dryers work better than _________ dryers because _________ dryers can ___________ and __________ dryers can’t. Is this true?

I don’t know what you filled the blanks with, but I’m fairly confident the answer is no. You may have friends who prefer one type over the other because they say they’ve had both and one dried their clothes faster, kept their clothes softer, or any number of other things. They’re probably right. But, the reason isn’t because of the power source their dryer got its energy from; it was due to the quality of the brand and model. Perhaps they bought a really good gas dryer and then bought an electric dryer a few years later of lesser quality. This factor easily accounts for the differences between performances of one type of dryer over another.

2: Gas Dryers are more expensive than electric dryers.

This one is absolutely true. To buy a gas dryer comparable to a similar electric dryer model you’re going to spend $50 to $100 more depending on the brand, and initial price point of the gas dryer.

3: Electric dryers cost more to run than Gas Dryers.

Once again, the myths are true. Electric dryers do cost slightly more to operate than gas dryers. The typical family washing 8 to 15 loads of laundry per week will spend approximately $100 to $250 more per year washing the same amount of laundry in an electric dryer compared to using a gas dryer.

Gas and Electric Dryer Comparison

Remember, gas and electric dryers provide the same performance. It all comes down to unit price, installation, and operation costs. As I mentioned earlier, you’re going to be paying a little bit more for gas dryers than for electric dryers. What I didn’t say, and probably more important, is that you’re going to pay between $100 and $200 dollars to install your gas dryer if you’re home isn’t already set up to run one.

However, for the time being, gas dryers can still save you money in the long run. (I say that because energy prices these days are more volatile now than they have been in the recent past, shifts in natural gas or energy demand, as well as energy supply disruptions can skew my assessment.) A typical family of 4 will easily save enough on their energy bill to cover higher costs associated with buying and installing gas dryers, however, at an estimated average savings of $10 to $15 a month, this won’t happen for a year and a half to two years.

Ahh, electric dryers are starting to look a little better now despite their price huh? There is one other factor to consider besides cost, gas itself. Gas is a very explosive substance, and though very rare, homes have exploded or caught on fire due to sometimes hard to detect gas leaks. You’ll need to take a little more care and precaution with a gas dryer than an electric dryer.

Final Analysis
There isn’t much of a difference between gas and electric dryers, when considered over the long term Gas dryers will save you some money, unless you’re an investor, in which case I suggest you buy an electric dryer, put the $50 - $100 in a large cap, low risk stock and take a 10% average yearly return on your money. (Even at $50 bucks for 40 years that’s still $2200 bucks!)

The best way to decide if a gas or an electric dryer is right for you is to do the following:

1: Check your home for gas line hookups; if your laundry room is already set up to work with gas dryers, you’ll probably want to buy a gas dryer.
2: Read my reviews, if you don’t find a gas dryer with features you need and want at a price you can live with start searching through electric dryers. Remember, the difference in cost between gas and electric dryers over the course of two years is $0.

Reader E-mailbag: Whirlpool Duet Washer / Dryer Review

I got a lot of reader response from the Whirlpool Duet Washer review over the last couple of weeks. But I got one complaint from Cheryl of North Carolina, she wrote:

“Dear Appliance Sensei,

I liked your reviews; they were very helpful and informative. After browsing many sites and doing serious research I finally decided I wanted to buy a Whirlpool Duet Washer, but I don’t want to buy it without a dryer to go with it. I looked for information on them, but I couldn’t find any helpful reviews. Worse yet, the Whirlpool Duet Washer is available as a set with an electric or gas powered dryer, could you please help me decide if Duet Washer / Dryer Combo is a good choice?

Thanks,
Cheryl”

Thanks for the feedback. To answer your question, sure! I would love to do a review of the Whirpool Duet Dryer. I understand not wanting to bring home a washer without knowing a little about the dryer that goes with it.

I’ll have answer your question over two posts, first a review of the advantages and disadvantages of electric dryers vs. gas dryers, second, a dual review / comparison of both Whirlpool Duet Dryer types. Come back tomorrow and I’ll have a detailed article on the differences between gas and electric dryers.

KitchenAid Architect Series KSRA22KNSS Refrigerator Review

Product: KitchenAid Architect Series Refrigerator KSRA22KNSS
MSRP: $2099

KitchenAid is notorious for manufacturing refrigerators of average or shoddy quality. Tonight I’ll ask and answer the question of whether or not Kitchen Aid has finally designed a quality refrigerator or if it’s still stuck in the mud of mediocrity.

Positives
The stainless steel design has a modern look and feel, making it a great fit for new homes. (Disregard that positive if you prefer vintage home surroundings.) Delving deeper into the features of the refrigerator reveals that its designed with electronic temperature controls, a very huge positive. Electronic temperature controls allow you to have greater, more precise control over defrosting, food temperatures, and a vast array of other things.

Shelf and drawer space is superbly designed. The refrigerator includes 3 drawers and the freezer includes 2 drawers. All shelves and drawers are made clear, see through plastic, making it very easy to find the food you want.

Negatives
Well, the only negative is price. This refrigerator doesn’t include enough features to justify a $2100 dollar price point. Models in this price range usually come with built in Ice and Water dispensers, as well as frost guard systems.

Final Analysis
This refrigerator is an okay buy, and only an average value. This refrigerator is worth at most $1899. The features list is lackluster and KitchenAid has a minor repair history issues. I give this refrigerator a 3.5 out of 5. This KitchenAid refrigerator has failed to impress me.

The KSRA22KNSS failed to earn a good refrigerator review.

The KRSRA22KNSS Refrigerator Gets a 3.5 out of 5.

Frigidaire Washer Dryer Laundry Center FEX831CS Review

Frigidaire Washer Dryer Laundry Center FEX831CS Review

Last night I took a break from product reviews to help all those out there struggling with a smelly refrigerator. Tonight I get back into the review routine and bring with a Frigidaire Laundry Center Review.

Positives
This Laundry Center is very light on the wallet. You get a washer and dryer in one unit for around $849.99. Most washers alone cost $500 - $1500 and Frigidaire offers you both for one low price! That averages out to $425 a piece.

Next, this is a second generation model which means this Washer Dryer Laundry Center has an established track record. Frigidaire was able to respond to customer complaints and made a few mechanical adjustments to decrease drying time and updated the cosmetics for a slightly more modern look. The reliability and durability of these washer / dryer combos are great and will likely be better than its predecessor.

Negatives
Unfortunately, this washing machine isn’t quite as easy on clothes as some higher end models. (Hey, you get what you pay for.) Washing programs are also very limited, including only 8 basic washing programs.

It’s also very hard for shorter people to reach the vertically stacked dryer, making it difficult for children to help out or do their own laundry. This refrigerator isn’t ideal for those who have limited mobility or physical injuries that make it painful or impossible to stand erect for short periods of time.

Final Analysis
This is an excellent washing machine and dryer for those who are tight on floor space because the dryer is stacked on top of the washing machine. At an average price of $850 this washer / dryer laundry center is a big money saver and will last many years.

I advise against this purchase if you have a lot of fragile clothing (Delicate knits, older clothes with sentimental value, etc.) because the washing machine is slightly more harsh on clothing than your average washing machine.

Because of its low price I give this Laundry Center a 4/5.
Frigidaire FEX831CS Gets a 4 / 5 for its low bargain price!

Remove Odors from Your Smelly Refrigerator

I know all too well the sting of a smelly refrigerator and how tough it can be to remove them. As a matter of fact, the refrigerator I use at work was once used for storing medical supplies including blood and organs. When we first starting using this foul refrigerator our food, especially fruits and vegetables (I stored grapes and apples.) absorbed the odors and rendered our food inedible.

After several experiments and diligent after hours efforts by me and a fellow coworker the odors were removed and our refrigerator was usable once again. Here is the process we followed that worked:

CleaningThis one is a no-brainer. We removed EVERYTHING from abandoned baby food jars to the vegetable crisper drawers. We threw out all the bad food and set the salvageable food aside. Its important to scrub everything outside of your refrigerator, including the racks, ice cube trays, and drawers. If you don’t clean them off thoroughly and let them dry the smell will never go away.

Once all loose articles have been removed scrub your refrigerator with some sort of anti-bacterial soap and water. We scrubbed our fridge several times with 409, waiting for it to dry and returning. Repeat until the smell is removed.

Next, if your refrigerator is really bad, like ours, unplug the fridge and leave the doors open. Let your refrigerator air for at least a day. (We left the refrigerator and freezer doors open from Friday till Tuesday for a total of four days.) After your refrigerator has aired out, scrub and dry it again.

Plug your refrigerator back in and place two to three baking soda boxes in the refrigerator and one to two baking soda boxes in the freezer and let it run for a few days. This will allow you to do two things: 1: Vent the ducts that funnel air into the refrigerator and freezer. 2: Determine if the air ducts are pumping foul air into your refrigerator compartments. (There may be several reasons why your refrigerator could be pumping smelly air into your refrigerator including dirty air vents and dead insects and small animals such as mice stuck in the air vents. This was actually the case for us and we had to remove the poor mouse.)

Now, after you have run the refrigerator for a few days, remove the baking soda boxes and scrub your refrigerator. Put your drawers and racks back in their respective places, and replace your boxes of baking soda. (If your vent is still blowing out bad air I suggest you call a maintenance technician or try airing out the vent a couple more times.) Viola! You’re refrigerator smells as good as new!

Alternative Refrigerator Odor Removing Agents
Bleach: If you’re desperate to remove the odors, try adding a little bleach to plain tap water and running a rag through your refrigerator. (I suggest wearing rubber gloves for this one.) Bleach is very helpful for removing odors embedded deep inside the plastic layering of your refrigerator.

Lemon Juice: Not as powerful as bleach, but great for those who have adverse allergic reactions to bleach.

Baking Soda Odor Removing Solution: Mix 1 cup of baking soda with a large bucket of water. This recipe creates a very effective odor removing solution.

Keeping your Refrigerator Smelling Fresh
Now that you have a clean refrigerator that smells great, you’ll want to keep your refrigerator smelling that way. Few people know this, but there are several alternatives to keeping a box of baking soda in your refrigerator.

Charcoal (My favorite)
This is an excellent method just because of the shock value. Grab a few charcoal briquettes from the charcoal bag in your backyard and crush them up. Now place them in a medium sized bowl and place it in your fridge. Like baking soda, charcoal will absorb the odors that the food in your refrigerator gives off….and its really cool.

Ground Coffee
This one is a little more trendy and a lot less cool than storing charcoal in your refrigerator, but its still effective. Get your favorite coffee roast, French Vanilla, Cinamon Snazzle, or Starbuck’s House Blend and grind them up. Place the ground coffee in a bowl that matches your sense of style and place it in the refrigerator and the coffee grounds will absorb the bad smells and give off the smell of coffee.

Warnings
1: I strongly advise you unplug your refrigerator before you start any major refrigerator cleaning attempt.
2: Don't mix chemicals, its very dangerous. Mixing chemicals can be deadly!

Sharper Image Hot Cold Mini Fridge Review

Products: Sharper Image Hot Cold Mini Fridge
MSRP: $99.99

Today I was talking about my dream to never have to come out of my room. With a door leading to a bathroom with bathtub and shower, I’m halfway there. The last two things I need are a microwave and a mini fridge. So, in honor of my dream I bring you a review of the Sharper Image Hot Cold Mini Refrigerator.

Positives
Aside from the obvious pluses like fits in your room, garage, or van, this mini fridge can fit small to medium sized frozen pizza boxes, six pack soda cans, and burritos. It comes with a car adapter so you can bring it with you on camping or road trips, allowing you to have a cold can of whatever at your fingertips. Make room for larger items with a slide out shelf, and sleep soundly in your room as this mini fridge hardly makes a sound.

This refrigerator can also keep things hot. With the flip of a switch pump out cold air and keep things like fast food, micro-waved burritos hot.

Best of all, this mini fridge does not require emptying and replenishing liquid coolant. (This is particularly useful if you’re the messy and forgetful type.)

Negatives
This refrigerator is smaller than the average mini fridge.

Final Analysis
This mini fridge has a lot of positives to justify the $99 price point like heating and cooling modes and a slide out shelf. It can be powered either a convention AC adapter or a car adapter. (Both included.) which makes this mini refrigerator very convenient. The only flaw is the size, it’s a little small and if I ever did realize my dream of having a mini fridge in my room I would prefer to buy a bigger one. However, the cheap $99 MSRP still makes this mini refrigerator and excellent buy. I give this mini fridge a 4/5.

Sharper Image Hot Cold Mini Fridge gets a 4 in this review from the Appliance Sensei.

LG LSC27990TT Refrigerator Review

Product: LG LSC27990TT Refrigerator
MSRP: $3499

I thought it was high time I review a real top of the line refrigerator; tonight I bring you a review of the LG LSC27990TT Refrigerator.

Positives
The first and most obvious positive is the built in TV screen. It’s a bright 15” LCD screen of wondrous joy! Save counter space and never lug a clunky television back and forth from room to room again with a television built into your refrigerator? Of course you’re wondering if you can hook it up to cable or satellite television. Of course you can! This is an LG refrigerator and it wouldn’t come anywhere near my list of the highest end refrigerators if it didn’t. Even if television isn’t your thing, you can still wow you’re neighbors and friends with your incredibly high tech looking kitchen or use the built in FM radio to listen to your favorite radio stations.

I’m not done with all the features this LCD screen offers. If you’re hungry and don’t know what to make, you can browse through preloaded recipes. Wondering what the weather will be like? Use the built in weather service to plan your wardrobe for the next 5 days.

Better yet, if you’re a forgetful person, and I am, it has an easily programmable alarm system that will automatically remind you of important days like your anniversary, your daughter’s soccer game, or that date you scheduled for Friday night. Greater still, load pictures of your favorite occasions and set the LCD screen to scroll through them.

Moving on to the more practical features, this refrigerator is designed with a large 26.2 cubic feet of space to fill. Stay organized with a utility bin, 2 BigBin freezer door bins, 3 slide-out wire freezer drawers, 5 refrigerator door baskets including four clear boxes and a special space for dairy products, and 3 tempered glass shelves.

The crisper the most advanced I’ve seen by far. It uses a specially designed crisper box to maintain optimum humidity levels to keep your fruits and vegetables as fresh as possible for as long as possible.

The most innovative design feature is the built-in-door ice maker that fits within the refrigerator door. This frees up valuable freezer space.

Negatives
There is only one negative, this high end refrigerator is only covered by a typical 1 year labor 7 year parts warranty. However, if you’re shelling out $3500 for a refrigerator you probably have the money to buy one every year. If that still bothers you, most companies offer extended warranty plans that cover accidents as well as defects.

Final Analysis
There are so many features on this refrigerator I haven’t been able to touch on in this review. However, I think I covered the main highlights and they more than justify the price point. This refrigerator fit for a king’s kitchen gets a 5 out of 5.

The LG LSC27990TT Refrigerator is the best home refrigerator on the market!

LG LRFD22850TT Refrigerator Review

Ahhh, the first refrigerator review for the Appliance Sensei. I’m starting to love this more and more. I was at my friend’s house and I started telling him about my quest to buy my mom a washing machine and he suggested I review his LG LRFD22850TT refrigerator. Of course I was thrilled at the idea so here is my review:

Product: LG LRFD22850TT Refrigerator
MSRP: $1600 - $1799

Positives
This refrigerator has so many positives its hard to choose where to begin. I’ll just start with the bottom. This is a freezer on bottom model and what a nifty freezer it is! The freezer drawer tilts at a 45 degree angle for easy access to everything you might fit into this spacious compartment, a very convenient feature indeed.

Moving upward, you’ll notice an external water and ice dispenser. This reduces energy consumption because you don’t have to open the refrigerator to get ice or water, and keeps water icy cold and ready to drink!

This refrigerator is also designed with digital temperature controls that make it easy to adjust the settings to your liking. (I personally like to keep the freezer as warm as possible and the refrigerator as cold as possible.) As you open the door to your refrigerator you’ll notice the crisper lid open automatically and the fruits and vegetables you keep inside particularly fresh. This is due to LG's Magic Crisper technology designed to humidity at optimum levels, keeping your fresh foods fresh, longer.

Negatives
The only negative for this refrigerator is price. This model retails, as LG refrigerators typically do, for $200 - $300 more than it should. I would only feel comfortable paying $1549 at the most for a model with these features.

Final Analysis
Once again, LG packaged a $1500 refrigerator in a really nice suit and sold it for more than its worth. However, if you’re the type of person who highly values style and design in your home this refrigerator is definitely worth the price tag as LG is on the cutting edge of home fashion. This refrigerator gets a 4.5 out of 5.

This LG Refrigerator is an excellent choice, especially for the ultra tredny.

If the water dispenser model is too expensive
you might want to try out its little brother.

Washing Machine Types : Front Load, Top Load, HE

Top Load Washing Machines

Positives
Top loaded washing machines are going be the lowest priced machines with that give you the most bang for your buck. Most retail between $400 and $600 and are going to last a long time. This is the oldest washer design and has been time tested.

Negatives
These machines are generally harsher on clothes compared to newer washer designs such as HE top load washers and front load washers. If your wardrobe consists of a large amount of delicate clothes I would stay away from these types of washing machines. Top loaders are also notorious for high energy and water consumption, a design flaw that could end up costing you a small fortune in the long run, especially if energy prices continue rising at an alarming rate.

Front Load Washing Machines

Positives
My favorite type of washing machine, and the type I hope to buy for my family! The best thing about this washer design is they can fit an enormous amount of laundry into one load, something my 6 person family would find very useful. Next, and just almost just as good they’re the most energy wand water efficient washers on the market.

Top load washing machines make off balance loads a thing of the past. You don’t have to worrying about starting a load and the machine going haywire during the spin cycle and banging the sides of your machine and damaging the unit. They’re also very quiet.

Most front loaded washing machines come with clear windows, and are excellent for distracting young children.

Negatives
High prices are a major con for these models, Most cost $1000 and more. If you’re looking for a lower priced machine stick with top loaded washers. If you have a bad back top loaded washing machines are a bad choice because you have to bend over to load the machine.

HE Top Loaded Washing Machines

The HE stands for high efficiency. For the most part they have the same pro’s and con’s of regular top load washers except they require specially formulated laundry detergent allows a high laundry capacity and wash better than most other types of models.

Negatives
Requires special laundry detergent. I’ve surveyed Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, and Vons several times in the last 6 weeks and only Wal-Mart and Vons have consistently had HE formulated detergent on hand. HE detergent is a little harder to find than regular detergent. HE technology is also new and prone to malfunctions.
Washer Type Summary
Top Load: Least expensive design, harsh on clothes.
Front Load: Most expensive design, saves energy and water.
HE Top Load Washers: Most efficient design, hard to find detergent, sometimes unreliable.

LG WM2688HNM Front Load Washer Review

Product Review: LG WM2688HNM 27" TROMM Front-Load Washer
Product Type: Front load washer
MSRP: $1599

This washing machine by LG has a very sleek and attractive look and feel. But, is this machine more than fancy blue cover? Does it provides enough features and perform well enough to justify a $1599 price point? Let’s weight the facts and find out.

Positives
The WM2688HNM is designed with a 4 cubic foot laundry drum. The average washer can is built with drums 3 cubic foot capacity, making this washing machine excel in laundry capacity.

The best cleaning feature is the SteamWash system that saves water and energy during the washing process and helps washing clothes better.

The LG WM2688HNM Washing machine includes 5 temperature settings and 9 washing programs that allow users to safely wash a wider range of clothing at home rather than going to an expensive dry cleaning facility.

Negatives
I’ve read several complaints about this washer vibrating during use. It is known to have damaged less solid floors (Wood flooring and linoleum tiling.). However, most people I know are still very happy with their purchase and solved the problem by placing a piece of wood under the washing machine. One resourceful woman said she used a treadmill mat from an old treadmill she bought and that it muffled the vibration noises and prevents damage being done to her linoleum flooring.

Final Analysis

The LG WM2688HNM Washing Machine is an excellent machine with a wide range of very useful features. This LG Washer also scores high marks for energy and water efficiency. However, the vibration issues and its slightly high price point prevent me from giving this washer a perfect score. If you like the stylish blue design (Like I do.) then this is an excellent washing machine that will make an elegant addition to your home.

Remember, this washing machine is bad for those with wooden floor boards or otherwise delicate flooring.
Final Score: 4 stars out of 5.
